Two Saturday meetings regarding travel plans for students who live within two miles of Akron Public Schools have been canceled due to bad weather. Another meeting has been added to make up for the missed opportunity for feedback.

The canceled meetings were scheduled for this weekend. A meeting earlier this week was also canceled when Akron Public Schools had a snow day due to low temperatures in the city.

The meeting planned for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Firestone-Litchfield Community Learning Center at 470 Castle Blvd. in Akron is still scheduled. Another meeting has been added for Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. at the auditorium of Ellet CLC at 309 Woolf Ave. in Akron.

The joint meetings between APS and city officials will help Akron update its School Travel Plan. Doing so will let the city apply for grant money to improve sidewalks, crosswalks and curbs and make it easier for students to walk or bike to Akron’s 46 public schools.

Once the plan has been updated, the city will be eligible to apply for Ohio Department of Transportation grants. The grants fund $500,000 worth of infrastructure improvements that would make it easier for students to get to school. There are also two-year grants available that would give the city $120,000 to create plans and policies that are sustainable beyond the initial funding period.
