Connect at the Rec creates safe spaces for young people
- Dance class and fundraiser to be held on May 31, featuring a performance to raise funds for costumes, shoes and related needs.
- Youth Spelling Bee to be held on June 6 from noon to 3 p.m. Registration required.

- Activities include games, guest speakers, food, line dancing, haircuts and manicure services.
- Schedule: Fridays starting June 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. for youth in grades 6-12

Free legal help available to Summit County residents
APD Officer Aaron Brown shared the following information:
- APD is hiring; application deadline is June 1.
- Summit County Pro Bono Collaborative is available to residents to provide free legal aid for a variety of civil matters.

Home improvement initiatives support residents in need
A Summit County official from the Department of Economic Development shared this information:
- Home weatherization program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.
- Income-based eligibility with an overall goal to reduce energy costs.
- Example savings: A high-efficiency furnace can reduce costs by an estimated $30 per month compared to an older furnace running at 80% efficiency.
- Aging-in-place home modification program
- Upgrades include the installation of grab bars and handrails, walk-in showers, and ADA-compliant toilets.
- Lead Abatement
- Residences with a child under 6 years of age are eligible.
- For renters, the county will work with landlords to implement improvements.

Fights, domestic incidents most common complaints to APD
Brown and Sommerville provide the following information:

- Residents can sign up for mass notification text alerts from the city. These include alerts about water advisories, event notifications, road closures, and other types of notifications.
Crime information:
- 7,676 calls in Ward 3 since Jan. 1.
- Most common complaints are for fights and domestic incidents.
- Warmer weather generally sees an increase in car break-ins.
- Remove valuables (especially firearms) from vehicles, lock cars and remove keys.
- “See something, say something” — APD encourages residents to report suspicious activity.
2026 road resurfacing list released
- Residents are encouraged to review the list and contact Sommerville if they think their street should be included.
Free Ring Doorbell Camera crime deterrent program
- Sponsored by Akron City Council, Sommerville said the program has been a “huge success.”
- A few doorbell cameras are still available.
