Investing in local creatives

Earlier this week, a group of area artists received a financial boost. ArtsNow, a nonprofit arts organization in Summit County, announced the recipients for this year’s Summit County Creative Investment Program. This is the second year for the program.

In total, the 15 artists selected were awarded $19,517. The grants are targeted toward career growth and can be used to cover the costs of professional development opportunities, such as registration fees and travel reimbursement.

Signal Akron out in the wild

In an effort to immerse ourselves more in the local community, the Signal Akron team is holding our Tuesday planning meeting at a different location around town each week. This week we set up shop at Compass at the Well CDC. (I had a latte and the Millstone breakfast sandwich.)

What I’d like to know: Where should the Signal Akron team meet next? Reply to this email with your suggestions or fill out this form.

Three things to do this weekend:

Explore your creativity Friday with Zine Zone at Summit Artspace. Attendees will learn about zines and make their own in this free two-hour workshop. Art supplies will be provided, but guests are also welcome to bring their own. The Zine Zone begins at 5 p.m. Register here. (If you get there early, be sure to check out Summit Artspace’s current exhibitions.)

Akron-Summit County Public Library will host the first Akron Music Festival Saturday at the main library. The all-ages event will feature performances and music-related booths throughout the library, giving attendees the chance to interact with local music stores, recording companies, theater groups and musicians. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Millennial Theatre Project will present “Legally Blonde” the musical Sunday at the Knight Stage. The musical is based on the hit 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a bubbly blonde who goes to Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. The show begins at 2:30 p.m. – Tickets are $20-$25.
