2024 is shaping up to be a big year for Akron. On Monday, Mayor Shammas Malik was sworn in. Later this year, the city will celebrate a big milestone when its 200th anniversary kicks off Dec. 6. (Although the Akron Bicentennial Celebration won’t take place until July 2025.)
There’s a lot happening between now and then in Akron, from a total solar eclipse in April to a host of activities related to the 150th anniversary of the Akron-Summit County Public Library to the Ohio primary in March and the presidential election in November.
For now, here are three events happening this weekend in Akron.

On Friday, Akron Soul Train will host an opening reception for its latest exhibits: Gina Washington’s “Universal Child” and Nyki Fetterman’s “MYSTICISM | BETWEEN.” The event begins at 5 p.m. and is free to attend.

Want to learn to sew but aren’t sure where to start? Street Craftery has you covered. Beginning Saturday, the downtown studio is offering a four-week class for new sewers. Students will learn how to operate a sewing machine and will receive step-by-step guidance on making a pillow. Sewing machines, materials and supplies will be provided. Students will meet at 11 a.m. every Saturday this month. The cost is $325.

Enjoy yoga with a view Sunday at the Akron Art Museum’s Yoga Series: Mindful Art. This all-levels class takes place within the galleries, giving attendees a chance to experience the museum’s current exhibits in a unique way. The 10 a.m. event is free for museum members and $15 for nonmembers.
