Broadway in Akron announces new season

Playhouse Square is gearing up for another season of great theater in Akron. Earlier this week, the arts organization announced its 2024-2025 Broadway in Akron lineup. Current season ticket holders have until Monday, June 3, to keep their seats for the upcoming season. Those interested in purchasing new season tickets can do so here. Ticket packages are $70 to $350 each. Tickets for individual shows are not yet on sale. All performances take place at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.

Here’s what’s in store for the new season:

  • “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” (Sept. 24-25)
  • “Dear Evan Hansen” (Nov. 12-13)
  • “Hadestown” (Feb. 22, 2025)
  • “Come From Away” (March 25-26, 2025)

Your weekend plans

Ohio Shakespeare Festival will conclude its current season with “The Wizard of Oz,” which opens tonight at Greystone Hall and runs through Sunday, May 12. This weekend includes 8 p.m. performances Friday and Saturday and a 2 p.m. performance Sunday. Tickets are $20 to $35 or $5 for students. (College IDs are required for students 18 and older.) 

Travel back in time with Akron-Summit County Public Library this Saturday. The downtown branch will host Akron on Foot, an interactive walking tour through the city center. During the walk, participants will hear live performances of famous speeches given by Jesse Owens, Mark Twain and Sojourner Truth — all performed at the locations of the original speeches. The free tour starts at 2 p.m.

 On Sunday, head to Cascade Plaza for the inaugural Downtown Akron South Asian Celebration. Guests can enjoy dancing and music as well as crafts, food and local vendors selling handmade items. The event will celebrate spring holidays and new year celebrations that take place throughout South Asia. The event runs from noon to 4 p.m. and is free to attend.
