After a week of less than summer like temps, the weather is finally warming up this weekend. And the timing couldn’t be better as we head into summer and several months of outdoor events. Speaking of events, this roundup of things to do this weekend has something for kids, something for adults and something for the whole family. Even better? Two of the events are free.
Here are three things to do in and around Akron this weekend.
Your Akron weekend plans
Little ones in preschool through second grade can spend their mornings with the Summit County Historical Society for Free Farm Fridays. The themed event takes place every week at 10:30 a.m. through Aug. 29 — the first week will explore the circus. Through song and play, attendees will learn about the history of circuses in Akron. The Akron-Summit County Library bookmobile will also be on-site.
On Saturday, join Akron Urban League Young Professionals at Jilly’s Music Room for the Black Music Month Celebration Kickoff. The show will open with performances from Akron artist DaLomonze and Cleveland musician Billie Mitchell, followed by a headlining set from Esther Fitz. Tickets are $25, and the music begins at 7 p.m.
The fifth season of Rhythm on the River kicks off Sunday at Howe Meadow in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park with performances from the Theron Brown Sextet and Open Tone Music. The free family-friendly event will also include field games and food trucks. The gates open at 2 p.m., and the concert starts at 3:30 p.m. Guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets and to bring their own food, but alcohol is prohibited. Please leave pets, except for service animals, at home.
