While Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day off for many people, its origin story is much more meaningful. Signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, MLK Day is observed on the third Monday of January. The federal government  designates it as a day of service. (The only other day to receive this designation is Sept. 11.)

Local groups and organizations will pay homage to King at a variety of events happening throughout the long weekend.
