With the Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center in apparent shambles, the City of Akron will decide in the coming months whether to rehabilitate the existing Akron Police Department headquarters or move the department elsewhere.
In February, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik’s office solicited requests for proposals on potential sites to build or renovate into the next police department headquarters.
This week, Malik’s office released a list of the 23 potential locations – including eight owned by private companies, nine owned by the University of Akron, and six owned by the City of Akron – that were under consideration.

Ten sites made the cut for further evaluation, including privately owned sites identified through the city’s request for proposals. The Stubbs Justice Center remains a possibility. According to the RFP, the city is prioritizing size, location (close to downtown), accessibility, community impact and cost.
During his “State of the City” address last week, Malik said the city will be partnering with an architectural firm to figure out the best option, whether it’s to rehab the existing building, rehab a different building, or build new. He said he will make a decision on the future site in June.
