This Saturday is the annual PorchRokr music and art festival in Highland Square, and I’m already mapping out what bands I want to see. (Want to see who’s playing? Check out the full lineup.) I’ll also be volunteering at PorchRokr in the evening at the beer garden, so if you see me, come say hi!
Speaking of local music: Single tickets for the Akron Symphony’s upcoming season are now on sale. The season kicks off Saturday, Sept. 21, with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Martinez. Tickets to all Akron Symphony concerts are $20-$60.
Your weekend plans
Kick off the weekend right by spending time in the great outdoors Friday during Evening Exploration at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. A park ranger will lead attendees on a flat, 1- to 1.5-mile hike and will share stories about the Cuyahoga Valley. The event is free, but guests are asked to register. Evening Exploration begins at 7 p.m.
Spend Saturday at the Akron Art Museum exploring two new exhibits: “Where We Live: Photographs of Human Spaces,” and Zeerak Ahmed’s “Mother, I Am Compelled To Leave / اماّں میں تو پاہونی.” Both exhibits are open through the end of the year. This weekend is also the final chance to view “Michelangelo Lovelace: Art Saved My Life.” The museum’s weekend hours are Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Take in gravity-defying aerial stunts — all from the safety of the ground — when the Props and Pistons Festival comes in for a landing Saturday and Sunday at Akron Fulton Airport. While much of the action will take place in the sky, the festival will also feature a car and bike show, a ceremony honoring veterans, a free kids’ zone with inflatables and crafts, and food carts. The festival is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Advance tickets are $23 for adults, $19.50 for seniors/veterans and $5 for kids ages 6 to 17.
