Akron City Council Member Nancy Holland, who represents Ward 1, resigned Friday afternoon.

Holland, a local attorney, took office in 2021, when she was appointed to the position following Council Member Rich Swirsky’s death.

Holland was sworn in for another term in December. Her resignation comes just days before City Council will hold its first meeting of the year, on Monday evening.

City Council Chief of Staff Joan Williams shared Holland’s resignation announcement:  “The past few years have been deeply fulfilling in many ways, and while I have given this job my all, it is no longer possible to do so.”

Signal Akron reached out to Holland for more information.

Akron City Council has 30 days to appoint Holland’s replacement, according to the City Charter.

New Akron Mayor Shammas Malik released a statement this afternoon:

“I thank Councilwoman Nancy Holland for her outstanding and exemplary public service to the City of Akron,” Malik said. “I’ve known Nancy for many years, long before our time on City Council. As a student at Firestone High School, she was a coach and mentor and during my time on Council she has been a colleague and close friend. She has given so much of her time, energy, strength, and heart to Ward 1 and the city, and we are all better off for it.”
