On Friday, catch Rubber City Theatre’s opening night of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” at Guzzetta Hall at the University of Akron. Featuring a cast of professional actors and students from the University of Akron, the musical tells the story of six teenagers fighting (or spelling) it out for the title of spelling bee champ. Friday’s show is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for University of Akron students and $10 to $30 for everyone else. The production also has shows Saturday, Sunday and next weekend.

This weekend in Akron number 2

Help clean up Summit Lake Park so everyone can enjoy it this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Hosted by the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, the monthly Canal Cleanups run from March through October at locations along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Snacks, water, trash bags, gloves and grabbers will be provided.

Don your green and gold and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day early with Gaelic Storm at the Goodyear Theater. The Celtic rock band’s roots go back to 1996 and span 14 albums. Sunday’s show starts at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $43 to $68 before fees.
