Your Akron weekend plans

Here are three things to do in Akron this weekend:

The Ohio Contemporary Ballet will pay homage to a local dance legend with Honoring Heinz Poll. The Friday evening performance at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall will feature three dances choreographed by the late Poll, including two that have not been performed since his death in 2006. The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $45.

On Saturday, join Let’s Move Akron for the East Side Bike Safety Ride. Meet at the Lock 1 trailhead behind 69 Taps (370 Paul Williams St.) at noon. Cyclists will ride from downtown to Ellet and back via roads and paved trails. The total trip is 10 miles. This is Let’s Move Akron’s first ride in its series highlighting cycling safety. After each ride, the group will collect responses from cyclists about the conditions they experienced. The responses will then be sent to the City of Akron Planning Department and AMATS.

Do you have a young train enthusiast in your family? Then you won’t want to miss All Aboard the Akron Express on Saturday and Sunday at the Akron Children’s Museum. The hands-on event gives kids a chance to explore and learn about all things trains. Attendees can meet conductors and engineers, explore train exhibits, participate in a make-and-take workshop and hop on the Little Roaming Railroad for a ride around Lock 3. This is a timed entry event that runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. Tickets are $8 to $10 for adults and $10 to $12 for children. Train tickets are sold separately at $5 per ride.
