Summary
- The Housing Appeals Board approved the demolition of 11 Akron houses. These homes were in violation of the housing code and few if any efforts were made to improve the properties.
- Three properties were voted to be removed from the board’s agenda. Sanitarian Supervisor Jodie Forester said these houses were making enough progress to be on track to becoming compliant. The owners will need to continue to work with the housing compliance division to become fully compliant.
- The board voted to remove 255 Cross St. from the demolition list. The property was previously approved to be demolished at the June 26, 2025, meeting, but Forester said she completed an inspection on Feb. 4 and found the home to be in compliance and that it no longer needed to be razed.

House removed from demolition list
255 Cross St. | University Park | Ward 3
- Forester gave an overview of the case (#6153). At the June 26, 2025, meeting, the board ordered the property to be demolished. An agreement to repair the property was signed on July 14, 2025. Forester inspected the property on Feb. 4 and found it to be in compliance with the agreement. All repairs were completed, and all permits were filed.
- The housing compliance division recommended rescinding the demolition order.
- The board voted unanimously to rescind the prior demolition order and remove the case from the agenda.
Houses granted extensions by board
833 Sherman St. | South Akron | Ward 5
- Forester gave an overview of the case (# 6170). On Jan. 22, the board granted an extension to Feb. 19 to keep the property free of refuse, keep it secure, restore the structure to habitable condition and schedule an interior inspection. Forester said the interior inspection took place on Feb. 17. The bathroom was complete and functional. Forester said a furnace permit is still needed, as well as a bathroom and kitchen register, kitchen sink and several repairs to the exterior of the home. Exterior repairs included installing downspouts, cleaning the siding, replacing or repairing the deck, installing handrails and providing storm doors.
- Forester said she had a follow-up inspection scheduled for March 16, but no one was there to let her in. She did not note any changes to the exterior of the home.
- She said the housing compliance division would not be opposed to removing the property from the agenda, with the owner following up to continue work on the property and remain compliant.
Owner asks for 90-day extension, gets 30-day reprieve
- The owner of the property said he has done the interior work and has been waiting for the weather to break to complete the exterior work. He asked for a 90-day extension to complete the remaining repairs. He has contractors that have been doing the work, and he was not sure why they were not at the home when Forester arrived for the inspection on March 16. A board member asked him what he has done on the interior, and what work remained on the exterior.
- Forester reread the list of remaining repairs.
- Forester asked the board to grant a 30-day extension.
- The board voted unanimously to remove the property from the agenda and have the owner follow through with the housing compliance division to continue to remain compliant.
- Forester said the property is no longer at risk of being demolished, but the case can return to the board if the owner fails to comply with the orders issued. She asked the owner to contact her to schedule an inspection.
