The Nov. 4 election is just around the corner (believe it or not) — it’s time to do a little work on the eight candidates running for the four open seats on the Akron Board of Education.

There are still lots of opportunities to hear from them, including Wednesday, when Signal Akron is helping to host a noon debate at Quaker Station.

We are partnering with the Akron Press Club, Akron Beacon Journal and Ideastream Public Media — the candidates will field questions posed by local journalists from the Beacon Journal, Ideastream and Signal Akron. Cheryl Powell, the executive editor of the Beacon Journal, will serve as moderator.

In addition, the debate will also be aired live on Ideastream.org, BeaconJournal.com and SignalAkron.org, courtesy of Ideastream Public Media. Ideastream will air the debate on WKSU 89.7-FM at 9 p.m. Oct. 9.

Editor-in-Chief (she/her)
Zake has deep roots in Northeast Ohio journalism. She was the managing editor for multimedia and special projects at the Akron Beacon Journal, where she began work as a staff photographer in 1986. Over a 20-year career, Zake worked in a variety of roles across departments that all help inform her current role as Signal Akron's editor in chief. Most recently, she was a journalism professor and student media adviser at Kent State University, where she worked with the next generation of journalists to understand public policy, environmental reporting, data and solutions reporting. Among her accomplishments was the launch of the Kent State NewsLab, an experiential and collaborative news commons that connects student reporters with outside professional partners.
