School board members in Akron, Ohio

Update: The list of candidates have been narrowed down to five for interviews: William Blake, Gwendolyn Bryant, Carolyn Felton, Gregory Harrison and Evelyn Rizzo. Signal Akron has requested application details for all residents aiming to fill the vacant public school board position.

The clock is ticking for the Akron Board of Education to fill its vacant seat following Job Perry’s resignation

Twenty candidates have thrown their names into the ring to fill Perry’s seat. The board decided to elect the next member rather than appoint the person.

Each candidate submitted application materials and is expected to be interviewed by the board.

Board policy states it must fill the vacancy at the next regularly scheduled board meeting that’s at least 10 days after the resignation, but the process can take no more than 30 days. If the process takes longer than a month, Summit County Probate Court will select the next board member.

The next scheduled board meeting is Oct. 7, but it remains to be seen whether the interview process will be completed by then. On Sept. 23, the board voted to give itself the full 30-day window to complete the process. As of Thursday, the board had not set an exact date for interviews or its internal election.
