A temporary staff member brought a firearm to Hyre Community Learning Center on Tuesday, prompting building security to quickly intervene, according to a press release from the Akron Public Schools.
No students or staff were injured in the incident, and the staff member was “immediately escorted” from school property. The staffer will be investigated by APS and the Akron Police Department.
The building’s school resource officer, who is not named in the release, is credited with acting quickly once the presence of the firearm was confirmed.
“Bringing a firearm onto school grounds is a serious violation of district policy and state law,” APS Director of Strategic Communications Stacey Hodoh said in a statement. “This individual’s decision to risk harm to our children and staff by transporting a gun to school is deeply concerning and unacceptable.”
The release does not characterize how or why the staffer brought a firearm onto school property, nor does it specify what type of firearm they had. The district maintains a zero-tolerance policy on weapons on school property. Violations of the zero-tolerance policy carry consequences, including potential termination.
“The swift action of our SRO underscores the importance of having law enforcement professionals present in our schools,” APS Chief of Staff Angela Carter said in the statement. “We are committed to providing a safe learning environment for all of our students and will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being.”
