The 11-member Summit County Council makes budget decisions that affect all aspects of the county and its residents. While there are more candidates on the ballot representing all of Summit County, District 2 is one of the six whose elected official will represent parts of Akron and appear on its residents' ballot.

Democrat John Schmidt is uncontested for re-election in District 2.

The U.S. Navy Reserve veteran was on Cuyahoga Falls City Council for 20 years, according to his biography on the Summit County Council website. He also served as the county’s deputy director for the Board of Elections and was president of the Cuyahoga Falls City Council.

Schmidt, a Cuyahoga Falls resident, is finishing a County Council term that began in 2021.

Schmidt did not respond to three emails and two phone calls from Signal Akron seeking comment about why he wanted to be re-elected.
