As the Akron area digs out from nearly a foot of snow, here is some helpful information you’ll need to get through the next couple of days.
Does your Akron street need to be plowed? Here’s the update
As of 9:30 a.m. Monday, the City of Akron posted on its Facebook page that it had cleared about 550 miles of roadway, which means crews still had 525 miles to go. Crews had started on residential streets and were transitioning all 57 trucks into the lower priority streets.
At noon, the city’s Facebook page said the plows had started on residential streets.
The city’s snow plow tracker shows which streets have been plowed so far – access it at akronohio.gov/snowplowtracker.
Parking bans in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls and Tallmadge
The City of Akron issued a snow emergency parking ban that started at 7 a.m. on Monday and continues until further notice.
During the ban, motor vehicles should not be parked on any city street and are subject to fines and towing per Akron city code.
The city is encouraging residents to download the Code Red app for updates on the parking ban, water boil alerts, road closures and more.

Cuyahoga Falls issued a citywide parking ban through Wednesday at 9 a.m. to allow access for emergency services and to help crews safely clear roadways. Vehicles parked on city streets during the ban may be ticketed and towed.

The City of Tallmadge will be under a snow parking ban through Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 8 a.m.
No Akron trash pickup Monday, one-day delay for remainder of week
Akron trash and recycling pickup will be delayed one day this week, with no curb service on Monday, Jan. 26. Curb service will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 27 and continue through Saturday, Jan. 31.
Akron-area warming centers are open
Summit Lake Community Center, (380 W. Crosier St.) will be open as a warming center from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sunday, Feb. 1.
Also, the Akron Emergency Overnight Warming Center (111 E. Voris St.) will remain open nightly through Jan. 30 (7 p.m. to 8 a.m.). The shelter also provides food and clothing. Learn more at akronemergencycenter.org. (Use METRO Bus #13 and #15 — the stop is located across from the Main Post Office on Wolf Ledges Parkway.)
All other city community centers will be open during their normal hours.
Barberton Lake Anna YMCA (500 W. Hopocan Ave.) will be open the following days and times as a warming center. ID is required for anyone over 18.
- Monday, Jan. 26, through Thursday, Jan. 29: 5:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- Friday, Jan. 30: 5:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Barberton’s Active Adult Center (also at 500 W. Hopocan Ave.) will be open the following days and times as a warming center.
- Monday, Jan. 26: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, Jan. 27: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, Jan. 28: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Thursday, Jan. 29: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Friday, Jan. 30: 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
- Warming Center only: Friday from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Norton Fire Department Central Station Training Room (3380 Greenwich Road) will be open as a warming center through Tuesday, Jan. 20, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The fire department is asking that people who need to use the warming center notify them by calling 330-825-3086.
The Tallmadge Recreation Center (46 N. Munroe Road) is open during its regular business hours to residents who have no other shelter or are facing heat, electricity or other serious issues in their homes due to extreme weather conditions. Residents may use the lobby or concessions area.
The center is open Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. -10 p.m., Friday, 5 a.m. – 8 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Akron City Council meetings will be held virtually Monday
All of Monday’s scheduled meetings of Akron City Council will be held virtually.
Residents who wish to testify during scheduled public hearings must submit their request in advance by contacting the clerk’s office via email at sbiviano@akronohio.gov by noon.
Members of the public who would like to provide public comment during the evening City Council meeting should sign up here by 4 p.m. to receive a Zoom link and participation instructions.

Akron schools are closed, district wide, Monday and Tuesday
All Akron Public Schools and auxiliary facilities will be closed Monday and Tuesday, including all district-operated buildings and administrative offices.
All after-school activities, athletic practices and extracurricular programs scheduled for both days have been canceled.
Students participating in the College Credit Plus program should follow the specific schedules and weather-related guidance provided by their respective colleges or universities.
Akron Board of Education meeting for Monday is canceled
The Akron school board meeting scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. has been canceled. Watch for meeting updates at akronschools.com and on the Akron Public Schools’ social media channels (Facebook, X and Instagram).
Akron METRO RTA may experience delays
Buses may be delayed or detoured. Check yourmetrobus.org for bus schedules, use the bus stop ID texting feature or the Transit App for real-time updates.
