Akron residents this November will elect four candidates to the Akron Public Schools’ Board of Education.
To help voters make informed decisions, Signal Akron has partnered with other local media outlets to host “Akron Decides: Akron 2025 Akron School Board Debate” on Oct. 8 at Quaker Station, 135 S. Broadway St.
All eight candidates for Akron’s school board have been invited to participate. The event is co-sponsored by the Akron Press Club, Akron Beacon Journal, Ideastream Public Media and Signal Akron.
Akron Public Schools educates more than 20,000 students annually, with a budget of more than $500 million. The school district also employs more than 3,500 employees across 47 schools and community learning centers.
Who will ask questions at the Akron Decides candidate forum?
During the debate, candidates will field questions posed by local journalists from the Beacon Journal, Ideastream and Signal Akron. Cheryl Powell, the executive editor of the Beacon Journal, will serve as moderator.
Want to pose a question to candidates? Submit it to AkronDecides@gmail.com.
Tickets are $35 each or $280 for a table of eight. Proceeds help the Akron Press Club fund scholarships for journalism and public relations students. The event includes a buffet lunch. Doors will open at 11 a.m., with the debate beginning at noon — it’s expected to last about 90 minutes. (Free seating will be available to members of the public who want to see the debate but not eat lunch.)
In addition, the debate will be aired live on Ideastream.org, BeaconJournal.com and SignalAkron.org, courtesy of Ideastream Public Media. Ideastream will air the debate on WKSU 89.7-FM at 9 p.m. Oct. 9.
Replays of the debate also will be available on the media partners’ websites.
