Lots of Akron-area organizations are hosting back-to-school giveaways where students can get free backpacks, school supplies and food as well as haircuts and manicures. 

Check out the list below for a round-up of Akron events. 

Aug. 28 | 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Beyond Expectations Community Fund, 2202 Romig Road

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade can receive free haircuts and school supplies at the Akron location of Beyond Expectations Barber College.

Aug. 26 | 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. | The City of Akron Recreation and Parks, 380 W. Crosier St.

This backpack giveaway, which is open to children ages 5 to 12, will be held at the Summit Lake Community Center. Giveaway items include clothing, backpacks and school supplies. To receive the free supplies, the child must be present. 

Aug. 25 | 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Winners and Leaders,  825 Fuller St. 

The Back to School Community Love Bash at Joy Park Community Center will include free haircuts and hair vouchers, manicures, school supplies, gift cards, clothes and food. This event also includes music, games and competitions. 

Aug. 23 | 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. | Chase Bank at Akron Centre, 50 S. Main St.

Chase Bank at Akron Centre will provide free backpacks filled with school supplies. 

Aug. 17 | 10 a.m. to noon | L.I.N.K.S. Community and Family Services, 135 Fulton St.

At the Fulton Street back-to-school outreach, L.I.N.K.S. 2 will be providing free food, haircuts and school supplies. 

Aug. 17 | Noon to 3 p.m. | Wesley Temple AME Zion Church, 104 N. Prospect St. 

At its 3rd annual back-to-school giveaway, there will be music, games, food and free school supplies. 

Aug. 11 | 2 to 5 p.m. | Hair Geek Studios, South Main Street block between Cedar and Exchange streets

Hair Geek Studios will bring fun and games to South Main Street for its 7th annual Back to School Block Party. In addition to free backpacks, school supplies, food and haircuts, there will be informational booths about school registration, vaccinations, after-school care and counseling. Those interested can register ahead of the event. 

Aug. 10 | 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. | Joy Park Community Center, 825 Fuller St. 

Joy Park Community Center’s You Matter Block Party will include music, food, inflatables, a splash pad and fire truck tours. They will also provide free backpacks, school supplies, haircuts and manicures. Local organizations, including Akron Children’s hospital, Cleveland Clinic and Care Source, will have tables at the event. 

Aug. 10 | 1 to 3 p.m. | Becoming a Light Ministries, 1104 Johnston St. 

This back-to-school giveaway event will include face painting and free haircuts. 

Aug. 10 | 2 to 4 p.m. | Keys to Serenity, 2887 S. Arlington Road

Backpacks and school supplies provided by Walmart will be available at this back-to-school giveaway, in addition to games, inflatables and food. 

Aug. 9 | Noon to 6 p.m. | House Three Thirty, 532 W. Market St.

Starbucks and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Summit, Medina and Stark Counties will supply 2,000 students with backpacks filled with school supplies. 

Aug. 6 | 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. | Patterson Park, 955 Patterson Ave.

As part of the Ward 4 National Night Out program, the North Hill Community House will offer free school supplies along with free food and refreshments.

Reegan Davis Saunders is Signal Akron’s community & service reporter. Reegan studied journalism and art at Kent State University, and they are passionate about the intersection of the two disciplines.

Although Reegan grew up in metro Detroit, they have always been an Ohio State Buckeyes fan. After living in Kent the past few years, they are excited to explore more of Akron, especially the coffee shops.

At Signal Akron, Reegan hopes to serve underrepresented communities by creating more accessible content.
