A 34-year-old man who was shot during an attempt to arrest him in Akron Thursday has died from his injuries, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The man, who has been identified by the Akron Police Department as Jonathan Moore of Akron, was transported to Summa Health hospital following the shooting and later died, the medical examiner’s office told 3News.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation previously told 3News its team was requested Thursday morning by the Akron Police Department “to investigate an officer-involved critical incident in the 500 block of Brown Street” in Akron’s University Park neighborhood.
According to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, the shooting happened around 8:36 a.m. while the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force was serving an arrest warrant.
Officials attempted to arrest Moore for an active felony warrant for vandalism at a home in the 500 block of Brown Street, according to the Akron Police Department. Moore has previously been charged with burglary, assault, strangulation, gross sexual imposition and attempted rape.
After Moore was confirmed to be inside the Brown Street residence, officers made their way through the home to attempt an arrest, Akron Police said in a press release. Officers then encountered a locked bedroom door and attempted to make contact with Moore, with no response. The locked bedroom door was then forced open, where Moore was found holding a firearm.
Akron police say Moore was told multiple times to drop his firearm, which he refused to do, causing one officer to deploy his taser.
“Moore fired one round, striking himself in the head, as an officer fired at least one round striking Moore in the chest,” according to the Akron Police Department.
Officers on scene rendered medical aid to Moore until EMS arrived.
BCI’s Force Investigations Unit and Crime Scene Unit are investigating the shooting. According to BCI, no officers were injured in the incident.
An internal investigation will be conducted by the Akron Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards and Accountability, according to the police department.
The involved officers have “approximately six and eight years of police service, respectively” and have been placed on paid administrative leave.
