Akron’s Flock cameras used thousands of times for non-local immigration enforcement
For more than three years, the Akron network of nearly 150 Flock surveillance cameras logged every car that drove by into a database instantly accessible to thousands of law enforcement agencies. Hundreds of those departments are deputized to enforce federal immigration laws.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik took the oath of office on January 1, 2024, for his first four-year term. Malik, who was the Ward 8 council member, became the presumptive mayor when he finished first in the seven-candidate Democratic primary and did not face a Republican challenger in the general election.
