Statehouse proposals to force cooperation with ICE decried by Akron City Council

Akronโ€™s mayor and City Council are opposing four proposed state laws that would require agencies such as the Akron Police Department โ€” and other entities like hospitals and schools โ€”ย to cooperate with the enforcement of federal civil immigration laws. At-large Council Member Jeff Fusco railed against the bills as an affront to Akronโ€™s right toโ€ฆ

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik took the oath of office on January 1, 2024, for his first four-year term. Malik, who was the Ward 8 council member, became the presumptive mayor when he finished first in the seven-candidate Democratic primary and did not face a Republican challenger in the general election.
