February is Black History Month, and Akron-area organizations and groups have programming planned throughout. A group of Kent State students and professors started the annual celebration in 1970 — six years later, President Gerald Ford officially recognized the monthlong commemoration of Black history and excellence.
Celebrating Black History in Perkins Woods

Visit this temporary exhibit that explores the history of the property where the zoo now stands. Through photographs, artifacts and interactive exhibits, the exhibit highlights the efforts of Black residents to build the John Brown Monument, save the zoo and serve custard.
