Winters in Akron — early spring seasons too — are full of brisk winds, snow and ice. What if you could escape these chilly conditions for a few days?
Getaways are within reach, thanks to a collection of direct flights out of Akron-Canton Airport. Below are seven (mostly) sunny options travelers can book out of CAK.
Last year, Akron-Canton Airport served nearly 760,000 passengers. On average, the airport hosts about 15-18 daily arrivals and departures. Click the link for the full list of direct flight locations.
“We want to give the best service to the community, and we know the more options they have, the better,” said Lisa Dalpiaz, the airport’s vice president of Air Service & Business Development.
Within reach of Mickey Mouse, beaches and dolphins
Orlando
Breeze Airways offers direct flights to the home of Mickey Mouse. In addition to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Florida and other family-friendly activities, Orlando offers easy access to Daytona Beach, a popular Spring Break destination.
Los Angeles
Starting in May, Breeze Airways will offer nonstop flights to LAX, providing Akron travelers access to sightseeing along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, shopping on Rodeo Drive and scenic strolls on the Santa Monica Pier.
Nashville
Nonstop flights to Nashville are available through Allegiant Air. Music City draws millions of visitors annually to the Grand Ole Opry, Frist Art Museum, Assembly Food Hall — one of the largest food halls in the nation — and other tourist destinations. If you’re lucky, you might spot one of your favorite country music stars at a Lower Broadway honky-tonk.
Savannah
Allegiant Air provides nonstop flights to Savannah where visitors can dine and shop along River Street. Approximately 37 miles south, vacation goers can watch dolphins and bike around the island of Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Myrtle Beach
Starting in May: Allegiant Air and Breeze Airways will offer nonstop flights to Myrtle Beach. The area offers a range of entertainment and attractions such as the Family Kingdom Amusement Park and Broadway at the Beach.
Destin/Ft.Walton Beach
Starting in May: Nonstop flights to Destin/Ft.Walton Beach will be available through Allegiant Air, allowing travelers opportunities to snorkel with dolphins and jetski in the Gulf of Mexico (also referred to as the Gulf of America). Laguna Beach, Panama City Beach and Pensacola are accessible through Destin/Ft.Walton Beach.
Las Vegas
Breeze Airways offers nonstop flights to the bright lights of Las Vegas. While the Las Vegas Strip’s endless shopping, dining and gambling options garner most of the attention, the city also offers family-friendly activities, from The Sphere Experience and AREA15, an immersive entertainment district, to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam Tour and Mandalay Bay’s Shark Reef Aquarium.
Airport-Canton Airport: Breeze and Allegiant airlines ‘great in our community’
Dalpiaz said the two airlines arrived at Akron-Canton Airport for similar reasons. Breeze Airways wanted to provide non-stop service at an affordable rate. And Allegiant Air sought the same — as well as a new Northeast Ohio hub after leaving Cleveland Hopkins International Airport around the end of 2021.
Both airlines offer double-digit, non-stop flights out of Akron.
“They are very great in our community to make sure that we are the most affordable airport, we are the lowest average fare airport in the region,” Dalpiaz said.
Breeze Airways launched its operation out of Akron-Canton Airport in 2021. CAK played a role in the airline’s early expansion, contributing to its present-day network of nearly 70 airports. In February, the airline announced plans to add CAK as its 11th crew base this summer. The move is expected to bring more than 60 pilot, flight attendant and maintenance jobs to the area.
Allegiant Air’s focus on small-to-medium cities has driven growth, including news in November that the airline added 44 new nonstop routes, including Akron to Jacksonville, Florida, and Akron to Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
